Change…

I said yes without hesitation when my parents asked me if I wanted to study in Pittsburgh. The first thing I had to do was learn English. I spent two months in a language school first, then I was sent to an international boarding school. I am never good at changing! Adapting to the new environment is time-consuming and stressful. In the beginning, I felt overwhelmed by the fast-paced classes that were beyond my English level. The instructors spoke too fast for me to catch up with though they just spoke at normal speeds.

I hardly understood what they were talking about and also felt confused about the homework. I had to improve my language skills. My mom had forced me to read English eBooks in Amazon Kindle. I started to read Magic Tree and Wimpy Kids. I was told that they were funny stories, but I could not see the humor at all; I was struggling with the vocabulary and grammar.

I had a lot of fun there though the academic work was demanding. I taught Omar, my Science teacher, Chinese by using my own unusual phrases in English, such as “wind flat waves quiet.” He could not understand me. Try to guess the meaning of “wind flat waves quiet.” I will tell you next time.
